About the Job (Job Brief) and Initial Assignments
Reporting directly to the Chief Investment Officer, the Managing Director of Taxable Fixed Income (MD–TFI) is responsible for the design and successful execution of Key Private Bank’s taxable fixed income strategy. At the highest level, the MD–TFI will play an active role within the firm’s asset allocation process by contributing her/his insights pertaining to monetary policy and the interest rate backdrop, credit market dynamics, and general economic conditions. In essence, the successful incumbent will be a “face of the firm” with respect to taxable fixed income portfolio management. S/he will also play a senior leadership role within KPB’s Investment Center and will be expected to foster a culture of collaboration and excellence.

Working with the CIO, the MD-TFI will identify relevant solutions, optimize requisite resources, and articulate KPB’s taxable fixed income strategy and solutions to all stakeholders including clients, prospective clients, peers and internal colleagues. Accordingly, exceptional communication skills in all forms and formats, and the ability to generate broad acceptance of her/his ideas, are essential.

The MD-TFI must also be willing and capable of serving as a “player/coach”. This entails managing several of the firm’s most sophisticated client portfolios while simultaneously serving as a valuable mentor, reliable colleague, and respected leader by a team of several direct reports. In total, taxable fixed income assets under management approximate $5 billion comprised of discreet strategies ranging from ultra-short duration to core/core-plus mandates, along with various bespoke solutions.

As the leading authority on taxable fixed income, the MD-TFI will also chair KPB’s Fixed Income Investment Committee and co-lead monthly Fixed Income related discussions with internal constituents. S/he will also be expected to network effectively with relevant support groups including marketing, compliance, technology support, legal and operations, and it is anticipated that s/he will be able to participate in business development and client relationship discussions, as needed.

Essential Functions
  • Assists in the strategic direction of Key Private Bank’s Investment Center Team
  • Fosters a collaborative culture that embodies a generalist mindset and encourages significant engagement, innovation and professional growth amongst several investment professionals by rewarding intellectual curiosity, quality, transparency and a holistic investment approach
  • Leads KPB’s taxable fixed income investment management process and articulates critical developments and strategic portfolio implications
  • Develops effective communication tools to convey recommendations and thought leadership in a coherent, transparent manner

Required Qualifications
  • A minimum of 15 years of highly relevant experience managing and trading fixed income portfolios, extensive expertise of all facets of fixed income markets and securities, and at least 10 years of senior-level responsibilities including managing and leading a high-performing team
  • CFA designation or graduate degree in business, finance, economics or related area strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of the full gamut of fixed income investments, demonstrable evidence of thought leadership and can bring best practices within portfolio management and oversight
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
  • Strong quantitative knowledge and proven success in applying such techniques used in building fixed income portfolios
  • Understanding of best of breed technology and systems requirements needed to effectively manage and oversee taxable fixed income portfolios
  • Must be compliant with all compliance/regulatory licensing requirements for the role
