Job Description

KeyBank’s Analytics and Quantitative Modeling Internship Program is designed to develop quantitative and analytical professionals through a robust and engaging exposure with several application areas. Rotational Analysts in the program will start with several weeks of foundational training to broaden their modeling, financial theory, technical software, presentation, and business writing skills. Rotations will begin upon completion of the foundational training, and continue for 12 months, each rotation being 6 months in length. Rotations are in a variety of business units of the bank, including Risk Management, Risk Modeling & Analytics, Enterprise Analytics, and Lines of Businesses. These rotations are designed to expose and develop a Rotational Analyst in the following competency areas:

  • Ability to perform data analysis, research, and draw business and financial insights through analysis with integrity and accuracy

  • Effectively and concisely communicate findings and recommendations for senior management, including effective data visualizations and insights.

  • Formulate hypotheses and design experiments, including sourcing, manipulating, preparing, and validating data for assessment.

  • The use of mathematical, computer science, and statistics techniques, such as predictive modeling, analytics, and machine learning, to inform business decisions.

  • Upon successfully completing the Rotational Program, you will have the opportunity for placement based on business needs, demonstrated skill, your interests, and performance throughout the Program.

  • Aptitude for problem solving using analytical and mathematical techniques across a broad spectrum of business and risk management areas

  • Conduct and leverage market and industry research for peer analytics and strategy.

  • Develop and support reporting functions for financial, regulatory, and business intelligence requirements.

About the Rotational Areas for the Program
Credit Portfolio Management
Combines external macroeconomic, industry, and geopolitical research with internal portfolio analytics to identify and mitigate emerging risks to KeyBank’s credit portfolio. Rotational Analysts can expect:

  • Pairing data sources like Bloomberg, Moody’s, CoStar, and FRED with internal credit databases and credit modeling results.

  • Designing programmatic solutions using software including Python, R, SAS, SQL, Tableau, VBA, and Excel.

  • Networking with and presenting to Line of Business leaders, Credit Executives, and Portfolio Managers

Enterprise Analytics
Discovers, interprets and communicates meaningful patterns of client and business data, focusing on data management, business analytics/insights, predictive analytics, and optimization. A Rotational Analyst can expect to engage in:

  • Banking Analytics: providing business analytics and data-driven insights to enable strategy and growth

  • Marketing Analytics: providing analytics to design, measure and optimize marketing investments and strategy

  • Data and Reporting Capabilities: deliver business reporting across all lines of business, functions and strategic initiatives

  • Wellness and Decision Sciences: provide decision management capabilities through predictive models, segmentation and algorithms to drive strategic goals

Enterprise Payments
Payment solutions are evolving to meet demands of businesses, from streamlining clients’ receivables and payables processes to expertly managing their liquidity and funds. Rotational Analysts can expect to engage in:

  • Pipeline and Forecast Modeling – Utilizing salesforce data to help drive greater accuracy in our deposit and service charge forecasts

  • Revenue Generation – Utilizing data across the enterprise and external sources to identify cross-sell opportunities as well as new client targets

  • Performance Management – Help develop strategies around compensation and show data driven research for how changes to our structure could incentivize behavior

Market Risk
KeyBank’s trading activities include buying and selling fixed income securities (corporate bonds, mortgage backed securities, etc.) and using derivatives to help customers hedge their exposure to interest rates, commodity prices, and foreign exchange rates. Market Risk helps price these instruments and quantify the risk of loss due to changes in market prices or counterparty defaults. A Rotational Analyst will expect to:

  • Work closely with trading desks. We make sure traders stay within their limits and support their activities by building new models.

  • Calculate daily risk metrics, produce reports, investigate pricing issues and changes in risk numbers, and evaluate models.

Model Risk
Responsible for assessing predictive models across all of the enterprise’s uses to ensure that the models are designed suitably for the business use, performing as intended, and reliable to inform decisions. A Rotational Analyst will expect to:

  • Gain and enrich exposure to a wide variety of modeling techniques such as, statistical modeling, machine learning, derivative and financial instrument pricing, simulation models

  • Understand and evaluate the theoretical, technical testing, and data for predictive models in their use.

  • Communicate with a variety of business, technology, and risk stakeholders on technical concepts to support and evaluate model use and empower strategy.

Risk Modeling and Analytics
Responsible for ownership and development of predictive models which enable prudent management of risk, capital, and business. Quantitative models and analytics are used to generate results and insights that empower the business to make smart, data-driven decisions - on individual transactions throughout a credit relationship, on business strategy and direction, on capital and risk management. A Rotational Analyst can expect to work on models and analytics supporting one or more of the following areas:

  • Business Growth and Originations – Approval / decline decisioning, pre-approval for marketing, risk rating customers, pricing for credit risk, anti-money laundering

  • Portfolio Management – Loss forecasting, allowance and reserve estimation, stress testing, capital adequacy, fraud detection, card authorization, line management

  • Exit and Collections – Pay-off and attrition, loss severity, collection strategies

Analyst Program Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science, Engineering, Finance, Economics, Computer Science, Data and Business Analytics or other quantitative fields of study.

  • Relevant work or internship experience in banking or finance is a plus

  • Outstanding academic achievement (Minimum cumulative 3.3 GPA required, 3.5 GPA or above preferred)

  • Strong quantitative, analytical and problem-solving skills. Knowledge of statistical techniques and data mining concepts and approaches.

  • Experience and exposure to programming for data analysis and statistical/numerical techniques (Python, R, SQL, SAS, VBA, and others as appropriate)

  • Experience in data visualization techniques and associated software (such as Tableau)

  • Exceptional interpersonal and relationship-building skills

  • Effective oral and written communication skills to explain quantitative techniques and perspectives to various audiences
